The first time I saw it on the shelves, I thought to myself, “waterproof decking tape? Does that sound like something dangerous?” It is. But, before we get into that, let’s look at how a simple deck can be waterproofed.
There are two kinds of decking tape: those that stick to the wood surface and those that require a special glue to stick to the surface. This kind is more difficult and costly. To make it easier on the DIYer (me), there are two varieties of vinyl decking tapes available on the market today. Standard and in-screw tapes are the most popular.
Waterproof decking tape, as its name suggests is a tape intended to be used to waterproof. The tape’s adhesive bonds water-resistant vinyl to the decking surface, which prevents moisture from entering. This is ideal for decks made of plastic since regular plastic doesn’t have the required properties to withstand moisture. The tape isn’t suitable for decks made from wood because it lacks the necessary water resistance.
Waterproof decking tape must be applied to both surfaces just as similar to any other tape. First, place the tape on your wood deck. Then, attach the tape to the wood. When you are ready cut the tape, however you should ensure that the tape is tightly attached to the the decking surface. To achieve this, you will need apply pressure to both surfaces with your hands. If done properly you shouldn’t even notice that the tape is there. If something happens to the tape, you shouldn’t attempt to tear it apart as this can lead to damage to both the tape and the decking surface.
Waterproof decking tape has an exact method of application that must be followed with attention. The tape edges could be damaged by the force of cutting it. Instead, use an instrument or knife to cut the tape. To remove excess tape, you could also use a small screwdriver or electric tool to cut. If you take care when handling the tape you can rest assured that no damage will take place when you apply it to the decking surface.
This tape is easy to apply. Simply wet the tape with water, then rub it onto the decking material. Do not under any circumstances rub the tape if it is damp. This could cause the tape’s moisture or the water to be damaged.
After the tape is applied to the decking material you should let it dry. You should not attempt to remove the tape or remove any excess tape from the surface with any tools. The tape should remain in its place , and it will remain in place until you actually try to remove it. This is a better time to use a knife to remove any debris or dirt that might have been generated during the application process.
Waterproof decking tape is sold in a variety of hardware stores and can be quite affordable. It is worth looking at the cost of maintaining a decking surface that is waterproof, rather than replacing it every year due to cracks. These are the basic steps to protect your decking surface from damage caused by the elements.
